The sky is the limit with freight broker training. This is the sky I marveled at on my early morning walk recently. I started Brooke Training as a way to help others reach for the sky. The learning continued this week as more students came to our class.

Once again, I am so proud of the stupendous talent of the instructors who teach for Brooke Training. These recent graduates learned much. Even when they didn’t think they had much to learn. That’s a lesson for all of us. We may go into a situation with low expectations and come out realizing we learned something valuable. They learned freight brokering, as well as skills that will be advantageous in any industry.

I was hesitant to take the training course, thinking I had already been cultured in the trucking industry there wasn’t much I could get out of the class. The course and instructor proved me wrong. I not only learned the logistics of the business but also a lot of self improvement skills that will help me become and stay successful in this industry or any other moving forward.

The long weekend is here.  Memorial Day Weekend is a time to remember all the brave men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice for the United States. Those men and women died in the line of duty defending us, defending our freedoms.

This weekend is a time to be thankful for our country, the freedoms we enjoy and the life of promise we can have because of so many who have given their life for our country.   They unselfishly signed up for what ultimately meant a life cut short.  I say thank you to those families who have had to mourn that great loss.  I say thank you to the fellow soldiers who watched their compadre fall.

We are privileged to be a certified by the TexasWorkforce and approved by the Department of Rehabilitative Services. Click here for veteran information. As a result, I am honored to meet a lot of vets who take our Freight Broker Training and other courses at no cost to them.  We enjoy encouraging  their start at a new life after their military service.  I get to hear stories of their buddies who didn’t make it out.  They are thankful to be alive,  but also challenged to understand why they still have their life when others don’t.

Grateful people are successful. Why? Because they are always looking for the upside, the winning way, and the possibilities. Zig Ziglar was one of the most positive people who every lived…and he was highly successful and taught others to follow that plan. I am a huge fan of Zig.

What is a key to success to anyone starting out in business, starting a new job, or new career?

Seek out others who have succeeded in that arena.

Seek out others who are positive people. Avoid those that will drone on and on about what doesn’t work and how hard it is and how to failure is so sure… It sounds like a no brainer but it may actually be challenging to find positive voices.

Our natural tendency is to remember the bad things that happened in our day. Do you remember the one rude guy who cut you off in traffic or the 1,000 of guys who drove nicely next to you? When you recall your day do positive or negative experience stand out in your mind?

We of course know that no matter what you do, there will be good days, even great days of success, mixed with downer days. Practice viewing challenges as opportunities…not obstacles to your success. When we surround ourselves with others who stay positive, we are much more likely to stay positive.

Have you noticed every morning the news reports how many new cases of Coronavirus popped up? I have heard very few reports about the 96% recovery rate. I have heard few reports on how incredibly unlikely it is that you will contract the disease (like .0008% chance).

It is a serious disease that I certainly don’t want to get, but I’m not living in fear…I am going on with my school, encouraging students and graduates towards success. I will stay positive through this.

Stay safe, stay positive and hang out with others who encourage positivity.

Mom’s are the best. My mom is my best friend. I have a great attitude in life because she has a great attitude about life. Not because she has had an easy life but because she looks for the good in every day and in everyone. She is in her 80s now and so full of thankfulness for all she has in life. She grew up in an orphanage, has lived a simple but full life. She met my dad in that orphanage. They were “throw away” children yet grew into incredibly valuable people. I owe my life to them, in more ways than one. I asked my mom to make a list of her thankfulness. This is what she typed up on her laptop (she is a high tech great granny):

Things I am thankful for:

Thankful for God allowing me another day
Thankful for God’s love
Thankful for Christ Jesus who died for me
Thankful for being able to pray
Thankful for God’s beautiful earth for the birds that sing, trees, flowers, rain and for the sunshine
Thankful for my beloved husband
Thankful for a cool house in the summer and warm in the winter
Thankful for my wonderful children, all my grandchildren, and great grandchildren
Thankful for my church family

One of the things I love the most about my business is the interesting characters that come through our classes. I get to hear lots of life stories, amazing backgrounds and the unexpected twists along the road of life.

Robert Landaros, Sr from Plainview, Texas graduated from Brooke Transportation Training in February 2020. Robert is multi talented. He owns a bar in Plainview, Texas called Red Door (on facebook as Robert Red Door, Plainview, Texas).

Robert also has a freight background working international freight. So he was juggling his job and his bar when he decides he was ready to take on a new adventure.

He thought through what he would need to do to follow his dream of having his own business in logistics. First step was to take a course that would set him up well and give him the support he would need. He found Brooke Training on Google, read the reviews and enrolled in our Dallas class with his son.

After he graduated, he got his broker’s authority. He was all ready to rock and roll… then the Corona Virus hit. He started calling all the contacts he was sure would give him some loads to move, only to find they were all shut down.

I often say that there will always be work for a freight broker. You just have to work hard, seek out opportunities and ask for advise from someone knowledgeable.

Robert immediately called his instructor at Brooke Training, Vinny, to ask if he had any ideas on how to beat this. “Vinny loves what he does, he wants his students to succeed so he is always available to give advice or talk through issues. He provides the support after the class that is what makes Brooke’s training so great. He told me to call industries that are working hard now like food suppliers and logistics. He told me in colorful language to get up and get going. Vinny put a little fire under me”, Robert said.

That was the push that launched Robert’s logistics business. After some calling and calling and then more calling Robert eventually found a shipper who was willing to let him bid a load. Roberts says, “Well I must have beat everyone’s bid because I got the load. Everything went right and the shipper decided to give me more business.”

The loads Robert is currently moving are Computer servers and wall mounted ATMs from big name manufacturers. Everyone is working from home so Internet servers have got to work. Banks are closed so ATMs are in high demand as well.

Robert told me about a recent contract he got that he hopes to become the main source of his work: Mission Tortilla. They are headquartered close to where Robert lives. He likes to be able to personally meet with them and they like working with a local. He knows the drivers. He is moving truckloads full of flour destined to become tasty tortillas.

I can’t think of anything more challenging that starting a business at the onset of a Pandemic. Robert is an inspiration. He didn’t sit back and have a pity party. He got some advice and a push from a knowledgeable advisor and got his business off to a great start.

I hope to improve our freight broker training courses, continually. Years ago I met an amazing man from Southern India named Krish Dhanam. He embodies the American dream, rags to riches, immigrant to outstanding and proud American citizen. He inspired me greatly I knew he could be an inspiration to our freight broker students, so I ask him to come speak to our live classes whenever he can.

Here is a bit of Krish’s biography:
Krish was born in Vizag in Andhra Pradesh and finished his formal education with an MBA at the Institute of Management Technology in Ghaziabad. Equipped with that learning he migrated to the US in 1986 with his bride Anila. Winning a sales contest in 1990 earned him a ticket to a seminar conducted by the legendary motivator Zig Ziglar. This chance encounter would be the catalyst that shaped the next two decades as Krish joined the Ziglar Corporation in 1991 as a telemarketer and eventually became their Vice President of Global Operations.
Through training, teaching and facilitating seminars all over the world, Krish launched his professional speaking career. Krish has successfully delivered his message of hope, humor and balance in seventy countries on six continents.

As a curriculum designer he has authored programs on staff development, sales, leadership, personal development and communication. His client list is the who’s who of global enterprise and he has received accolades from some of the most distinguished organizations including The United States Army, American Airlines, Etihad Airways, Christian Dior, Marriott Hotels, Cadbury Schweppes, Hitachi Consulting, Ryan, EDS, Texas Instruments, Toshiba, Pepsico, Enterprise Rent a Car and Energizer Batteries, Apollo Hospitals and Cognizant and after today Netzsch.
Today’s he is CEO with Skylife Success, co-founder of Krish Dhanam Training and President of Mala Ministries and serves as a global adjunct with Ravi Zacharias. He is the author of The American Dream from an Indian Heart and From Abstracts to Absolutes and contributing author to the book Top Performance written by Zig Ziglar. His latest book Hard Headed and Soft Hearted was co-authored with Rick Belluzzo former President of Microsoft.
The Dhanam’s make their home in Flower Mound, Texas.

Summer is the perfect time to catch up on things you always wanted to do for yourself and for our July grads, that is exactly what they did. My mom is my best friend.  At 84, she is full of thankfulness for all she has in life.  She grew up in an orphanage, has lived a simple but full life.  I asked her to make a list of thankfulness.  This is what she typed up on her laptop (she is a high tech granny):

Things I am thankful for:

Thankful for God allowing me another day
Thankful for God’s love
Thankful for Christ Jesus who died for me
Thankful for being able to pray

Have you ever thought about being your own boss? As your own boss you can work hard and be a great success but it is all up to you. As your own boss you can set yourself up for success by planning, training and finding mentors.

A freight broker and freight broker agent are their own boss. Similar to a real estate agent, they can work as an independent or under a larger agency. I strongly recommend starting as a freight broker agent. As an agent you are your own boss with a great support system in the brokerage you work through. Most people choose to start in the freight brokering business as an agent working under the umbrella of a brokerage firm that is bonded and has brokerage authority. A freight broker agent has less upfront costs that an independent freight broker. As an agent you do not need a license or a bond.

What are the costs and additional requirements to be a broker or an agent?

TRAINING
I highly recommend training as the first requirement, your first expenditure. Professionals who take advantage of training, start their career way ahead of those who try to figure it out on their own. Brooke Transportation Training Solutions would love the opportunity to train you as a freight broker.

Complete training before you spend money on these other things because in training you will figure out your specific needs.

HOME OFFICE

Besides training, a freight broker agent will need to set up a home office with a computer with two screens, a 4 in 1 printer/scanner/fax/copier machine, a desk, chair, file cabinet and office supplies.

PHONE

A freight broker spends a lot of time on the phone. So a great phone with a headset, unlimited long distance and high speed internet is essential. I do a lot of business in my truck equipped with bluetooth handsfree phone service.

SOFTWARE

The software available to help in the workings of a freight broker is continually improving. Subscriptions to software can cost $30 to $150 per month depending on how many services you choose to utilize. Transportation Managment Software (TMS) and Loadboard software are essentials.

BROKER FEES

Some brokers (but not the majority) charge fees to the agent as a part of their internal business model for such things as marketing, advertising, training and usage of their systems.

LEGAL FEES

If you are going to be a broker you will need to choose a name for your logistics company then set up the legal structure of the company (such as a SCorp, LLC, or other) Your accountant or attorney can advise you on the best choice for your situation. Fees are set by the professional you select.

BROKERAGE AUTHORITY

File for your brokerage authority with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety (FMCS). The
Administration filing fee is $300. OP-1 form. Once you’ve obtained your registration you’ll file a biennial update form MC-150 (no cost).

PROCESS AGENT

One time fee usually $45 to $60. Submit Form BOC-3 to the FMCS

BUSINESS REGISTRATION

Register your business through the Unified Carrier Registration system. Current fee is $76 for brokers.

SURETY BOND

Brokers are required to obtain a surety bond or trust fund in the amount of $75,000. Ranges for the broker bond are generally $750 to $9000 depending on your credit situation.The bond is issued by an insurance company that offers freight broker bonds. The trust fund is generally around $1500 per year and also requires collateral with a bank.

LOCAL REQUIREMENTS

Check with your state for particular requirements to operate a business in that state.
